You will initially feel as though you have traveled over the Atlantic to a European city when you arrive at the historic city of Arequipa. Arequipa seems very different from all the other Peruvian cities we have been to because of its Spanish architecture, tidy parks, and snow-capped mountains.

The primary characteristic that sets this city apart from others in Peru is the abundance of silac, a volcanic rock that originates from the bases of the three nearby volcanoes: El Misit, El Chachani, and Pichu Pichu. Arequipa has earned the moniker "The White City" because of the powdery texture of the granite.

1. Take A Strolling Tour For Free

Wandering about Arequipa on foot is the most authentic way to see the city as a native would. One of our favorite ways to really see a new area is to go on a walking tour, and Guru Walk's Free Arequipa Tour provides daily walks beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Your guide will meet you in the tiny passageway known as Pasaje la Catedral, which is located behind the Cathedral Basilica (see map). And when you see the red signs, you'll know you're at the correct area.

From there, the guides will take you to the oldest neighborhood in Arequipa (where you can find amazing craft beer; more on that later), the highest viewpoint in the city, Tristán del Pozo, a traditional colonial house where you can admire the baroque architecture, and many other stops that will show you the city like you've never seen it before.

Although the program and guides are fully gratuitous, the walking excursions are. Depending on how much you liked the tour, you can pay whichever much you're willing to.

2. Enroll In A Culinary Course In Peru

The greatest approach to enjoy Peruvian cuisine, which is well-known for its international culinary scene, is to visit a local market and prepare some of the most well-liked products into mouthwatering regional meals.

Since we've been enjoying Peruvian food for a while, enrolling in a cooking class there was something we "had to do" while there.

• Aptly called Sunset Rooftop Bar, this establishment boasts expansive views of the Plaza de Armas and volcanoes from its top floor location at Le Fover Hostel.

• Unobstructed views of the entire city may be enjoyed while sipping your favorite cocktail at the Terraza Arequipa Suits Plaza Hotel.

• Waya Rooftop Bar: This rooftop is situated on the plaza and offers a view of the cathedral and volcanoes as you have a drink.

5. Take In The Scenery At Yanahuara Mirador

Yanahuara is a peaceful residential area in the city that is home to Yanahuara Scenic Point, which serves as the city of Arequipa's emblem.

During a phase of urban improvement in the 19th century, the lookout was constructed. The gorgeous white pillars and surrounding area that contribute to the Andalusian style ambiance of the place were constructed using white volcanic rock from the bases of adjacent volcanoes (which are noted below).
