Fun Activities in Peru's Arequipa

Updated at : 15 Jul, 2024

Known as the "White City," Arequipa is Peru's largest colonial city and maybe its most beautiful as well. You will undoubtedly be enticed to discover all the top activities in Arequipa by its distinctive, European-inspired architecture and its charming street corners.

You will initially feel as though you have traveled over the Atlantic to a European city when you arrive at the historic city of Arequipa. Arequipa seems very different from all the other Peruvian cities we have been to because of its Spanish architecture, tidy parks, and snow-capped mountains.

The primary characteristic that sets this city apart from others in Peru is the abundance of silac, a volcanic rock that originates from the bases of the three nearby volcanoes: El Misit, El Chachani, and Pichu Pichu. Arequipa has earned the moniker "The White City" because of the powdery texture of the granite.

There are so many things to do in Arequipa, Peru, including enjoy the craft beer scene on one of the charming roofs, go on an exciting day excursion to the world's deepest canyon, people watch on the charming plaza, or climb one of the surrounding iconic 6,000-meter volcanoes.

The top activities in Arequipa, along with information on how to get there, when to go, where to dine, and where to stay, are all included in this guide.

Top Activities In Arequipa

Arequipa, also known as the White City, has a fascinating food and drink culture, beautiful streets, and a long history. You could explore the best spots in the city for weeks on end by just strolling about.

Here are our top suggestions if you're seeking for the greatest activities in Arequipa:

1. Take A Strolling Tour For Free

Take A Strolling Tour For Free

Wandering about Arequipa on foot is the most authentic way to see the city as a native would. One of our favorite ways to really see a new area is to go on a walking tour, and Guru Walk's Free Arequipa Tour provides daily walks beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Your guide will meet you in the tiny passageway known as Pasaje la Catedral, which is located behind the Cathedral Basilica (see map). And when you see the red signs, you'll know you're at the correct area.

From there, the guides will take you to the oldest neighborhood in Arequipa (where you can find amazing craft beer; more on that later), the highest viewpoint in the city, Tristán del Pozo, a traditional colonial house where you can admire the baroque architecture, and many other stops that will show you the city like you've never seen it before.

Although the program and guides are fully gratuitous, the walking excursions are. Depending on how much you liked the tour, you can pay whichever much you're willing to.

2. Enroll In A Culinary Course In Peru

The greatest approach to enjoy Peruvian cuisine, which is well-known for its international culinary scene, is to visit a local market and prepare some of the most well-liked products into mouthwatering regional meals.

Since we've been enjoying Peruvian food for a while, enrolling in a cooking class there was something we "had to do" while there.

There are a few culinary schools in Arequipa, but Peruvian Flavors is the one that jumped out to us the most.

You get to pick the foods you wish to prepare for this culinary lesson. We had little trouble choosing between our two favorite Peruvian meals, ceviche and llomo saltado, which are prepared with alpaca flesh.

The 400-year-old structure where the culinary lesson is held has been exquisitely restored and is now a five-star restaurant. You may prepare a great lunch in the kitchen by yourself because they are only open for supper.

If you're lucky enough to be instructed by Arthur, the head chef, you'll get to discover the methods he used to build his own restaurant in Arequipa after studying in France and the UK.

3. Sip Pisco Sours

Since pisco sour is the national beverage of Peru, it makes sense to explore Arequipa's establishments and sample your way to the best one. We know from experience that not all cocktail bars are made equal, so check out these places and decide which one really honors the national beverage.

  • Arequipa Beer Club: Sip a classic Pisco sour from their patio sofas, or try one of their inventive takes on the traditional drink.

  • Deja Vu: A popular spot for both residents and visitors, this club is laid back before the sun goes down. Enjoy a Pisco while taking in views of the stunning San Francisco cathedral.

  • Chicha por Gaston Acurio: Savor some of the greatest meals and drinks in Arequipa while taking in the lovely terrace-like setting.

  • Museo del Pisco: Known for its excellent artisan cocktails, this popular Peruvian bar chain is well-known throughout the country. The laid-back vibe and large selection of cocktails will have you enjoying more than just the traditional Pisco sour.

4. Savor A Beverage On The Rooftop

Savor A Beverage On The Rooftop

Arequipa's rooftop pubs come alive after dusk, with the majority offering the greatest locations in town for a delectable cocktail and breathtaking views of the city's center and the surrounding volcanoes.

  • Aptly called Sunset Rooftop Bar, this establishment boasts expansive views of the Plaza de Armas and volcanoes from its top floor location at Le Fover Hostel.

  • Unobstructed views of the entire city may be enjoyed while sipping your favorite cocktail at the Terraza Arequipa Suits Plaza Hotel.

  • Waya Rooftop Bar: This rooftop is situated on the plaza and offers a view of the cathedral and volcanoes as you have a drink.

  • Restaurant on the Top: This eatery, also well titled, boasts the square's tallest rooftop bar. Try to come about 5:00 pm to get a place for sunset.

  • Katari Hotel: Savor a delicious lunch at the bar with a direct view of the neighboring volcanoes.

5. Take In The Scenery At Yanahuara Mirador

Yanahuara is a peaceful residential area in the city that is home to Yanahuara Scenic Point, which serves as the city of Arequipa's emblem.

During a phase of urban improvement in the 19th century, the lookout was constructed. The gorgeous white pillars and surrounding area that contribute to the Andalusian style ambiance of the place were constructed using white volcanic rock from the bases of adjacent volcanoes (which are noted below).

With a little investigation, you may discover well-known quotations from Arequipa and Arequipa intellectuals written all over the facade.

The breathtaking view of El Misti, El Chachani, and Pichu Pichu—the three surrounding volcanoes of Arequipa—is what makes this viewpoint so well-known. All of them held great religious significance for the Incans, and several were even thought to have been utilized in the past for human sacrifices.

After taking in the view, continue your exploration of Yanahuara's peaceful, car-free city streets, which are dotted with vibrant stores and adorned with mouthwatering eateries. You may drink a smoothie or a local dish on the park behind the Mirador de Yanahuara and enjoy the weather. You may also read this: Exploring Major Cities: Uncovering Ancient Ruins

6. Learn About Mundo Alpaca

Mundo Alpaca, Alpaca World, is one of the top free things to do in Arequipa that you shouldn't miss. The fluffy bunch of alpacas on display is the main attraction, but you can also visit museums to discover more about the distinctive textile traditions from beginning to end and learn about how the fibers are weaved using pre-Incan ancestral skills on a backstrap loom.

A major cultural addition to the city, Mundo Alpaca offers an incredible opportunity to see how all those vibrant sweaters and ponchos were made with centuries-old weaving techniques.

We will warn you not to approach the South American camels, or vicuñsince, as they have a tendency to spit when they feel threatened or need to defend themselves. They won't get combative, but if you're not careful, you can receive a rough greeting.
